What Your CPA Actually Needs From You (and When)

Every tax season, the smoothest returns belong to the same kind of client. Not the most organized one. The one who sends a few key documents early instead of everything at once in the final week.

Here is what actually drives your return, in the order we need it.

The five that matter most

  • Photo ID. It protects you. Identity checks are how we make sure a return goes out under your name and nobody else's.
  • Social Security cards for you, your spouse, and dependents. One transposed digit can bounce an e-filed return.
  • Last year's tax return. It tells us your carryovers, your elections, and what questions to ask before they become problems.
  • Income documents as they arrive. W-2s, 1099s, K-1s. These trickle in from January through March, and sometimes later. Send each one when it lands.
  • Anything that changed. New house, new business, new baby, new state. Life changes are where deductions hide and where surprises come from.

Why early beats complete

Waiting until you have everything feels responsible. In practice it compresses all the work, all the questions, and all the review into the last stretch before the deadline, when everyone's queue is longest.

When documents come in early, we can spot the gaps while there is still time to fix them. A missing 1099 in February is a phone call. The same missing 1099 in April is an extension.

The portal does the remembering

Our client portal keeps a running checklist of what we have received and what is still outstanding, so you are never guessing. Upload a document from your phone the day it arrives and it is checked off, tracked, and in the queue.

Start now: upload your first documents through the client portal, or book a consultation on our contact page if you want to talk through your situation first.
